The construction of this marching snare drum meets the standards of a true professional instrument, built for performance rather than display, making it an excellent choice for professional musicians, historical reenactment groups and living history organisations.
This drum reflects the long history of military field drums, which developed from earlier military traditions and became widely established during the Renaissance. Rope tension drums remained in military use for centuries, including through World War II.
The drum stands 15 inches high, with a brass shell measuring 15 inches in diameter and 11 inches in height. It is supplied in its original brass finish, with hand finished wooden hoops/rims painted in traditional blue, red & white.
The brass shell can be polished to restore its bright appearance using a readily available metal polish, such as Brasso.
Natural calfskin heads are fitted over wooden counter hoops/rims on both the batter and snare sides, with gut snare wires on snare side mounted on adjustable brass fittings, following traditional construction methods.
The traditional rope construction method is used with cotton rope and brass rope sliders on both hoops/rims to protect their finish, while the leather braces slide back and forth along the drum rope to tighten or loosen the drum.
The drum comes with a carrying belt and a pair of hardwood drumsticks, as shown in the pictures.
