Our Irish flute is modeled after the powerful 19th-century designs of Robert Sidney Pratten, its 18th and early 19th-century inspired construction design takes you back to the elegance and character of the classical era.
The Pratten design was developed to produce a strong, resonant and projecting sound. Its large bore and enlarged tone holes provide greater volume and projection, making this style of flute particularly suitable for outdoor playing, traditional sessions and folk ensembles.
The flute is handcrafted with a precisely made large bore measuring down to 13 mm, along with a carefully undercut embouchure measuring 13 mm in width. Large sized tone holes, including a 9 mm F# tone hole, are proportioned for clear response and strong projection.
Carefully selected Cocobolo wood following the 18th and early 19th-century construction method. Hand-carved key-blocks directly from Cocobolo wood body. The rings are individually hand-crafted from boxwood, adding a distinctive contrast and elegant appearance while giving the instrument an added sense of craftsmanship and value.
The headjoint is brass-lined with a screw-adjustable stopper. The flute is tuned to modern concert pitch at A=440–442 Hz, with a 10 mm tuning-slide opening.
The 8-key simple system extends down to low C and includes keys for C, Bb, G#, short F, long F, D#, C#, and low C. The C# and low C keys comes with a balance-adjuster screw for fine alignment. The keys are cast in brass and left in their original finish, fitted with brass pins, steel springs, and leather pads.
