Scottish Smallpipes By Hakam Din

Crafted with absolute precision, this beautiful set of pipes offer a unique experience to professionals while also being an excellent starting point for beginners on their musical journey.
This set of Scottish Smallpipes is made of Indian Cocobolo Wood, fully seasoned, relatively low maintainance and resistant to harsh weather conditions.

The basic scale of the Scottish Smallpipes is identical to the Mixolydian scale of the Highland Bagpipes and uses the same fingering as them.

The advantage of mouth blown pipes is that it’s easier for Highland Players to transition to smallpipes without having to learn the bellows technique, while the Bellow Blown Set offers the advantage of greater stability of tuning (due to smaller fluctuations in humidity and temperature of air across the reeds) and the possibility to sing or talk whilst playing.

For pipes in A, the tenor drone is tuned to the low "A" of the chanter (the tonic), and the bass drone to the "A" an octave below this. The Baritone Drone works as a dominant drone to the E above the bass.

History:

Originally one of the first documented bagpipes in Scotland, along with the Border pipes, smallpipes were popular in the Lowland areas of Scotland as far north as Aberdeen. Evidence shows them to have existed since the 15th century, when they were used for dancing and entertainment in court and castle, later they became popular amongst burgh pipers and town minstrels until the early 19th Century

Scottish Smallpipes are extremely popular with Highland pipers, many of whom use them as a second instrument better suited to indoor playing, and play them according to the Highland tradition or as a quite rehearsal for the highland pipes

PLEASE NOTE: Reeds are not Included in the set, perfectly compatible drones reeds can be bought from Scottish Reed Makers Pipe Dreams and perfectly compatible chanter reed can be purchased from Abbot reeds, feel free to contact us for assistance.

These are an excellent way to get into smallpipes. The Cocobolo wood is beautiful, the bag cover looks great, the carrying bag is excellent! Buy the ezeedrone reeds to go with them. I'm an experienced piper (46 years), it took me 10 minutes to set them up and get them playing. My only change will be to retie the main stock so the drones lie how I want them. At 1/8th the cost of "name brand" smallpipes, these are better than I expected!
