The earliest mention of this small clarinet in Eb is by Jean Benjamin de La Borde in his Essai sur la musique (1780), where he adds the Eb clarinet to those listed by Roeser and Francoeur. During the early nineteenth century, it was widely used in military bands and dance music
A march featuring the Eb clarinet is J.H. Pujolas' No. 6 'Nouvelles Marches Militaires à Plusieurs Instruments' (Paris, 1791).
A well-known solo work for the Eb clarinet is Berlioz's 'Symphonie Fantastique' (1830).
